Which schemes you can actually get, what they are worth, and where they run. The most important thing to know is that energy schemes are devolved: what is available depends on which nation you live in, and the differences are large.
Grants that come off your quote
These pay a fixed amount to everyone who qualifies, regardless of income. Your installer claims it and takes it off the price, so you never handle the money. These are the ones we subtract from the figures elsewhere on this site.
- Boiler Upgrade Scheme up to £7,500 England and Wales Your installer applies on your behalf and the grant comes off the quote.
- Home Energy Scotland grant and loan up to £7,500 Scotland Apply through Home Energy Scotland before the work starts. An interest-free loan of up to £7,500 is available on top of the grant, with a 1.5% administration fee capped at £150.
Schemes you may be eligible for
These are means-tested. Where you qualify the work is often free rather than discounted, but most households do not qualify, so we never take them off a published price. It is worth five minutes checking.
- Nest (Warm Homes Programme) means-tested Wales You own or privately rent your home in Wales
- Energy Company Obligation (ECO4) means-tested England, Scotland and Wales Usually a means-tested benefit, or referral through a local authority scheme
- Great British Insulation Scheme means-tested England, Scotland and Wales Council tax band A to D in England, or A to E in Scotland and Wales
- Affordable Warmth Scheme means-tested Northern Ireland Total gross household income below £23,000

Schemes that have closed
These come up constantly because people remember them, or find an old article. None of them is available. Each one links to whatever replaced it.
- Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive closed 31 March 2022 Replaced by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which pays a lump sum off the quote instead of instalments over seven years. The change made the money visible at the point of purchase, which is what most households told the government they wanted.
- Green Homes Grant closed 31 March 2021 Announced in July 2020 and closed less than a year later. The voucher administration proved slow enough that many installers stopped taking part, and the National Audit Office later found the scheme had been rushed. Only a fraction of the budget reached households.
- Feed-in Tariff closed 31 March 2019 Solar panel costs fell so far that the subsidy was no longer judged necessary. Replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee, which obliges larger suppliers to pay for exported electricity but sets no floor on the rate.
